Scholarship Description: The Research Fellow to be employed at Noldus Information Technology will develop multimodal technology for automatic behavior measurement, reasoning and feedback for a variety of application domains. In order to let context-aware systems analyze and automatically respond to user’s behavior, measurement systems are required that recognize the user and interpret his or her behavior. Computer vision techniques use one or more camera views to interpret what happens in the scene without being intrusive. Behavior in daily life, including eating behavior, is a combination of many detailed actions. Analysis of e.g. the position of certain body parts such as head and hands, gaze direction and possibly interactions with other persons or objects indicate what actions are actually performed. The research will involve Bayesian techniques for articulated pose estimation and tracking from a monocular camera or multiple cameras, online action/gesture classification, object detection and identification, and distance measurements with cameras. To increase the robustness and efficiency of the analysis, a multimodal approach will be followed by including other types of sensors (e.g. accelerometers) that measure the actions in a complementary, but supplementary way. The multi-sensor behavior recognition system will feed into a Complex Event Processing (CEP) program, which also receives data from other sources (e.g. databases). The CEP software continuously receives “simple” events from various sources, integrates and/or combines them for complex event recognition, stores them for later retrieval, and triggers real-time feedback and action. The research work will be carried out within the Research & Development department of Noldus Information Technology in Wageningen. Scientific supervision will be provided by Dr. Oliver Amft, Department of Electrical Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology, where the Research Fellow will be enrolled as a Ph.D. student.
How to Apply: Candidates are invited to send their application, including a letter of motivation, curriculum vitae and the names of two references, as a Word or PDF file, to jobs-at-noldus.nl, Scholarship Application Deadline: Contact Employer

Scholarship PhD in Aeroacoustics, University of Cambridge, UK
Scholarship Description :
Applications are invited for two PhD studentships that are a part of a new collaboration between Dyson Ltd and the Department of Engineering at Cambridge. The studentships are to investigate air movement for high efficiency and low noise in the power range used for domestic applications. The projects involve a study of unsteady fluid mechanics, flow instability and acoustics and each have an experimental and a model component. This is a unique opportunity to address a real design challenge with a leading company through original research, which will have wider impacts on the acoustic emissions of many other sub 1kW air moving machines.
The studentships are to commence in October 2011.
Project 1: Towards a Silent Fan
The Dyson Air Multiplier’s striking design offers many advantages in operation: the airflow it generates is free of the turbulence associated with conventional fans; it is efficient, easy to clean and as quiet as other fans. The aim of this project is to take the design even further and create the ultimate low-noise fan while staying within a strict design envelope. The cooling airflow involves no moving blades and is at a low enough speed that the noise from this flow is not significant. This means that the focus of the project will be on novel, quiet internal flow components. Components of interest will be: the impeller blades that produce tonal noise, which is enhanced by interactions with the inlet and outlet geometry; and sections of the flow path with abrupt curvature that can cause local separations, wakes and noise. In this project we will develop simplified models to predict noise generated from the individual components (impeller, guide vanes, air jet, etc) and their interaction and integrate these ideas to develop design rules for reducing noise. The project aims to determine the lowest noise level that can be achieved for a fan with given air flow-rate, air speed and efficiency, and to develop design concepts that can achieve it.
Project 2: Aeroacoustics of Cyclone Separators
Cyclones are complex three-dimensional flows that swirl about a central column of fluid inline with the axis of rotation. The column consists of a solid-body rotation that at low flow speeds do not show large instabilities. However as the flow speed increases, the vortex core deforms into a rotating spiral and begins to precess around the central axis. The instability leads to a temporally periodic motion that results in a tonal noise. It is suspected that the frequency of the processing vortex core has a relationship with the frequency of the observed sound.
The main objectives of the project are to develop a model for the precessing vortex core and to discover ways of controlling noise either by suppressing the periodic flow instability passively, actively or by applying anti-sound control¬.
The challenge is to stabilise the flow or reduce the noise without introducing a loss in performance either in the form of pressure drop or particle separation.
The solution could have a wide range of applicability from vacuum cleaners to helicopter intakes and Ranque-Hilsch vortex tubes used for refrigeration.
Eligibility
The application is open to nationals of any country, but full tuition fees are not covered for overseas (non-EU) students. Stipends for 2010-2011 are 13,290 GBP, and available for 3 years. Candidates should hold an undergraduate degree in aerospace, mechanical or acoustical engineering, physics or related fields.
The projects would involve a mix of experiments in anechoic chambers, wind and water tunnels, theoretical modelling and numerical simulations. The student will be supervised by Dr. Anurag Agarwal and Professor Dame Ann Dowling and would work closely with researchers and designers at Dyson’s head quarters. The studentship is available from October 2011, though an earlier start date might be possible. Applications should include a CV, contact details for two professional referees, and should be sent to Dr. Anurag Agarwal, Engineering Department, Trumpington Street, Cambridge CB2 1PZ (email: aa406@cam.ac.uk). Informal enquiries can be made to Dr. Anurag Agarwal.
Application review will begin March 1, 2011 and will continue until the positions are filled.
Limit of tenure applies 3 years
Closing date: 6 May 2011.

Research summary:
Human psittacosis (parrot fever) is a zoonotic infectious disease, which is caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Chlamydophila (Chlamydia) psittaci. Transmission of the disease from birds to humans usually originates from close contact with infected birds, most frequently in the context of the poultry industry. The infection is highly prevalent in turkeys and ducks. But, recently we demonstrated that C. psittaci is also widely spread in the chickens. The purpose of the research is to examine the transmission of C. psittaci from infected chickens to humans (co-operation with Ghent University hospital). In addition, we are going to develop a recombinant C. psittaci vaccine for chickens, as vaccination chickens would also reduce the risk of zoonotic
C. psittaci transmission to humans.
Techniques: routine molecular cloning techniques, production of recombinant proteins, isolation of C. psittaci in different cell cultures, immunofluorescence staining, antibody ELISA’s, real-time PCR, micro arrays, gene sequencing, T cel proliferation assays, flow cytometry, production of polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies, 2D-gel electrophoresis, immunoblotting gaining experience in a biosafety level 3 laboratory (BSL3)

Project Title: CRANIUM: Cardiff Research into Advanced Neuroimaging Methods
Project Description:
CRANIUM’s aim is to stimulate the next phase of development of neuroimaging methodology for translational neuroscience applications in human health and disease. Quantitative neuroimaging is being used increasingly in academic research, neurological and mental health and diagnostics, and the pharmaceutical industry. Cardiff University wishes to capitalise on its £30m investments in neuroimaging-capable Centres including CUBRIC, EMRIC and PETIC. We wish to harness the creative resources of PhD students to understand signals from the mammalian nervous system and develop neuroimaging methods that will be adopted by animal and human neuroscience researchers across the world. The CRANIUM programme therefore forms a key area of recruitment for Cardiff University’s prestigious President’s Research Scholarships.
The doctoral research projects will be experimentally focussed with a bias towards physical science methodology applied to biological systems in three main areas: integration of multiple neuroimaging modalities; experimentally informed modelling of brain structure and function; and enhanced image quantitation
Research students will undertake their projects under joint supervision with supervisors at CUBRIC (Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre, School of Psychology), the School of Biosciences, the School of Maths and the School of Medicine. We offer a research environment that, based on the multi-disciplinary expertise of the applicants, uses the most advanced neuroimaging methodologies to answer clinically relevant research questions. A multi-modal imaging approach in the proposed project will be strongly encouraged.
PhD projects will be funded for 3 years. This year we expect to recruit 2 students to begin in October 2011 and an additional student who would be able to start sooner than this but no later than October 2011 in the 4th subject area below.. There is flexibility in the final projects undertaken by students and this will be determined largely by matching the best students with the appropriate supervisors. In 201 we are recruiting candidates across the following 4 subject areas, further details of which can be found at http://www.cubric.cf.ac.uk/the-presidents-research-scholarships:
1. Imaging white matter microstructure: development and experimental validation of compressed sensing strategies
2. Multi-modal study of human brain activity during pharmacologically-induced sedation
3. FMRI as a physiological tool: the brain’s control of vital cardiovascular and respiratory functions.
4. Genetic contributions to variation in brain structure, metabolism and cognitive function.
CRANIUM provides the opportunity to encounter a wide variety of imaging techniques (MRI, FMRI, MRS, EEG, MEG, TMS, PET) including grounding on the physiological principles underlying the technologies, the key technical issues involved in performing studies, analysing neuroimaging data and the combination of data from different imaging modalities in a principled fashion. In year 1, students will undertake, in parallel with their chosen thesis programme, a tailored Graduate Training Course.
We aim to attract the highest quality numerate graduates who are motivated to apply their skills to neuroimaging research questions. We are pleased to consider a broad range of graduate backgrounds including, but not limited to: physics, engineering, bio-engineering, physiology, neuroscience, psychology, maths, computer science, genetics and statistics.

Scholarships for Master International Students from Government of Indonesia
Scholarship Indonesia :
The Tenth Conference of Heads of States of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) countries held on 1-6 September 1992 concluded among others the idea of providing scholarships by the Ministry of Education and Culture, which is now the Ministry of National Education (MONE). The scholarship is aimed to strengthen the relationship and mutual cooperation among the members of NAM countries, to reciprocate scholarship programs provided by other countries for Indonesian citizens, and to provide stronger cultural links between these nations. In 1993 the Government of the Republic of Indonesian started to offer postgraduate (master degree) scholarships to students from the NAM member countries.
However, since 2002, after the cold war ended, the scholarship has been offered to citizens of other developing countries such as Thailand, Fiji, South Korea, Suriname, Guyana, Turkey, Vietnam, Vanuatu and attracted more applicants. Over the years up to 2010 was recorded that 582 students from 53 countries have been awarded this scholarship program.
Due to the international political development, the use of the term (NAM) was considered irrelevant, which has resulted into the change of Developing Countries Partnership Scholarship (DCPS) or Beasiswa Kemitraan Negara Berkembang (KNB).

Scholarship PhD, Department of Haematology, University of Cambridge, UK
Scholarship Description :
Functional characterization of novel regulators of haematopoiesis and platelet function in Danio rerio
A PhD position is available jointly supervised by Dr Ana Cvejic and Professor Willem H Ouwehand who have an international track record in megakaryocyte and platelet biology and genomics.
Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) provide a new and powerful approach to identify novel regulators of haematopoiesis and platelet function. In a next step we want to explore the mechanisms by which common sequence variation exerts its effect on haematopoiesis.
This PhD project will initially apply high-throughput screening methods in Danio rerio to determine the function of novel genes, identified by GWAS, in haematopoiesis. Further studies will focus on novel genes encoding proteins that are important regulators of transcription.
The successful applicant will be trained in performing experiments with Danio rerio applying a variety of molecular biology and next generation sequencing techniques, state-of-the-art imaging systems, in situ hybridisation and immunohistochemistry and will mainly work in the Zebrafish genetics group of Dr Derek Stemple at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.
We are seeking applications from ambitious and highly motivated individuals looking to work in an interdisciplinary environment with education, experience or interest in haematopoiesis. Applicants should have a first or upper second-class degree in biology, biochemistry or related subjects. Familiarity with molecular biology techniques would be advantageous.
This 4-year studentship will cover University composition fees, College fees and a £16,500 stipend for UK/EEA applicants.
For more information on the group including recent publications, please see: http://www.haem.cam.ac.uk/transmed and http://www.sanger.ac.uk/research/faculty/

Eligibility Criteria
All scholarships have specific eligibility criteria based on a combination of merit and financial need. Candidates will be judged on the quality of their scholarship essays and the degree to which they meet the eligibility criteria. As a part of the merit criteria, the Committee will consider the academic and professional achievements and merit distinctions received. Please note that neither admissions essays nor GMAT results will be considered as part of the scholarship review process.
The group of need-based scholarships is primarily focused on emerging and developing markets. Therefore, when reviewing these scholarship applications, financial need is the main criterion. Please note that a number of supporting documents will be required for the need-based scholarships. You will find these documents listed under the need-based scholarship description.
