Program Rationale and Description
The CECD program is designed for talented basic/experimental researchers interested in multi-disciplinary research. The program aims to connect these researchers with essential knowledge and skills from cancer epidemiology, biostatistics, population genetics, and demography, placing an emphasis on how this knowledge can be integrated in the study of cancer etiology and outcomes leading to improved prevention and control measures through the synergism of bench and population sciences. The goal of this training program is to increase the pool of cancer researchers educated in the new scientific paradigms that require collaborations with researchers in disparate disciplines.
The fellowships are designed for three years and will include: l) didactic learning, 2) weekly seminars emphasizing connections between cancer biology, epidemiology, and demography; 3) research training and an applied project in population science of cancer involving the integrative approaches; 4) preparing scientific publications and a research grant application with interdisciplinary focus. The program will be based at the DCCC’s Research Program in Cancer Prevention, Detection, and Control, and will engage faculty, mentors, and Advisory Committee members from Duke Population Research Institute (DuPRI), Center for Population Health and Aging and other Duke Departments.

Scholarship Beasiswa | Ericsson Chalmers
Scholarship Chalmers, Ericsson
**Scholarships Beasiswa Ericsson :Ericsson scholarship supports international students
A new scholarship for international students has been established at Chalmers University of Technology. Ericsson AB will fully support the tuition fee for two international students at the master's programme Communication Engineering for the autumn 2011 intake.
“We are very happy that Ericsson wants to support the programme with scholarships. Our education in communication engineering is world class and the fact that Ericsson will provide its support confirms this”, says Gunilla Walther, Department of Signals and systems.
“We have a very good experience with graduates from this programme”, says Dag Jungenfelt, Head of Product Development Unit Microwave Networks at Ericsson. “To ensure that we can continue to meet the future needs in knowledge and skills, we are proud to be part of the establishment of this scholarship.”
From autumn 2011, students with citizenship in a country outside the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland will be required to pay tuition fees for Swedish Higher Education. At Chalmers the fees are set to SEK 140 000/year for most educations, and to 190 000/year for educations within the field of architecture.
The students that wish to study in Sweden can apply for several scholarships. At Chalmers, some of the scholarships are funded directly by Chalmers and others are provided by the Swedish Institute.

Scholarship BEasiswa | PhD in Historical geology
PhD student position in Historical Geology and Palaentology
Origins of Proterozoic-Cambrian photosynthetic microbiota
Starting date: Open from the closing date for applications.
Unicellular, organic-walled photosynthetic microbiota (prokaryotes and eukaryotes) diversified at an increasing rate through the Proterozoic and in the Cambrian explosion. Their phylogenetic relationships are still poorly understood because their morphology is not always sufficient to infer their systematic position. Studies of phenotypical features, combined with cell wall ultrastructure, biogeochemistry and biomarkers may help to unravel their biological affinities. More precise placement within a geologic time frame will allow the cause-effect relationships between evolving photosynthesing (primary producers) and forthcoming heterotrophic biota (consumers) versus global environmental change to be better understood.
The PhD student will collaborate with researchers at Uppsala and in foreign universities working with the palaeobiology, systematics, ultrastructure and biogeochemistry of cell wall, and the evolution of organic-walled microbiota. The aim of the project is to elucidate the biological affiliations and relationships to extant microbiota of selected microfossils (acritarchs), with emphasis on their life cycle, reproduction and environmental adaptations. The study will be based on analyses of phenotypical features and the cell wall ultrastructure, biogeochemistry and biomarkers by new microscopic, spectroscopic and tomographic techniques. This interdisciplinary approach between Palaeobiology, Earth Sciences and Astrobiology encourages a strongly motivated candidate to develop collaboration with scientists from different disciplines and across the fields of studies.
The applicant should have a university degree with a background in micropalaeontology, palynology, biology and/or geology, and a keen interest in palaeobiology, evolution and biogeochemistry. Applicants with skills in microscopy, laboratory techniques and image analyses are especially welcomed. The abilities to work in a team, to share experiences and knowledge, and be open to the application of new methods of research are essential. Because of a strong international character of the research, applicant is expected to have a good knowledge (spoken and written) of the English language. Acquisition of a (basic) knowledge of Swedish is strongly recommended to facilitate departmental communication and activity, but this is not a requirement for recruitment.
The holder of a PhD-student position shall primarily devote her/his time to own research and study. Other departmental work, such as educational or administrative duties can be part of the position up to 20% of a fulltime work.
The Ph.D. position is for four years where financing for the first year will be a postgraduate study grant (Utbildningsbidrag) and during the following three years as an employee of the university as a Ph.D student.
The applicant must be eligible for PhD studies. Priority is given to those who are deemed to show the greatest aptitude for a successful completion of the graduate studies. The Uppsala University is strongly committed to the equal opportunity policy and women are especially invited to apply.
Eligibility for PhD program at Uppsala University:
“Ch.7Sec. 39 HF: Applicants are generally eligible for programs at the graduate level if they have:
- Completed an advanced-level degree
- Completed at least 240 academic credits worth of courses, with at least 60 academic credits at the advanced level, or
- Acquired the equivalent knowledge in some other manner either in Sweden or abroad.”
The application shall consist of CV, copies of exams and list of courses including the grades obtained, a copy of the Master thesis (or a draft thereof), as well as names of two persons that can be used as referees.
More information can be obtained from Prof. M. Moczydlowska-Vidal, phone. +46-18-4712743,malgo.vidal@pal.uu.se.

In the later stage of the project is the goal to optimize and integrate the electrical and mechanical system for the future wind turbine. Validation against measurements of the used models is an important part of the project. Measurements in a 4 MW wind turbine are a part of the project. The work involves model development for generators, power electronic converters and analysis due to dynamic/transient behaviour in the grid. Also diagnostics methods will be developed; by using the models developed in the first part of the project, to investigate the possibilities to find failures in the wind turbine, both mechanical as well as electrical ones.

Project description - Formal verification of composite service compliance to trust contracts
The PhD project “Formal verification of composite service compliance to trust contracts” will be conducted in collaboration with THALES ( www.thalesgroup.com ) a world leader in mission-critical information systems for defence and security, aerospace and transportation and headquartered in France.
The PhD thesis will take place in the Aniketos project. One of the main goals of this project is to propose a set of security profiles that can be attached to web service model elements. A security profile gathers a pre-defined consistent set of security properties. The goal is that the designer is simply asked to select the required profiles. These data are then used to generate the security XML files that aim at configuring the security solution. This SOA Modelling Suite, together with the existing risk assessment DSML at system-level and the PhD results will provide Thales with an end-to-end risk assessment and risk mitigation modelling suite, from operational analysis to code generation. More details can be found in the attached document: Formal verification of composite service compliance to trust contracts .
Profile of the candidate
- Master`s degree or equivalent Computer Science with a specialization in Software Engineering or Software Security.
- A background in one of the following area is an asset: application-level/web application security, software testing, model-driven engineering.
- The candidate must be fluent in both written and spoken English. Fluency in French is a plus but not mandatory.
The PhD candidate will be employed by the Thales Group.
