Scholarship Beasiswa | Rosalynn Carter for Mental Health Journalism
What the Fellowships Offer
Professional Development: Fellows come to The Carter Center for training and then work on their projects from their own newsrooms or offices, maintaining complete independence. Fellows participate in advisory groups with mental health experts and other fellows that meet quarterly.
Stipends: Six U.S. fellows are awarded stipends of $10,000 each. International fellows receive a comparable stipend in their own currency.
Flexibility: The fellowships do not require recipients to leave their places of employment; fellows control the schedule of their project work.
Unique Projects: Fellows are encouraged to choose timely topics that may educate the public and/or raise awareness. Use of new and emerging media is welcomed, and fellowships are tailored to suit the needs, interests, and experiences of each fellow.
Frequently Asked Questions Am I eligible to apply?
Applicants must have at least three years of professional journalism experience and submit a full fellowship application. Recipients must attend meetings at The Carter Center in September at the beginning and end of the fellowship year. Should I reapply for a fellowship if I did not receive one in the past?
It is the choice of the applicant to reapply, however, being a former applicant does not carry weight in the application review process. There have been cases when an applicant is awarded a fellowship after several denied submissions. Who is the best person to write my letters of support and/or recommendation?
The letter should be written by someone familiar with the applicant’s professional work and can speak to his/her journalistic abilities. Because the feasibility of a project is weighted heavily, it is ideal to have letters contributed by individuals that have decision-making authority related to the project (such as collaborators, editors, publishers, financial supporters). Letters from friends or relatives are discouraged. How will I know when my application has been received?
The applicant will receive an e-mail from the fellowship program once every component of the application has been received, including the recommendation letters. Will I receive feedback on my application?
Due to the high volume of interest in the fellowship, program staff are unable to provide individual feedback on applications. Remember that the application should address the following: feasibility of completing the project, timeliness of the topic, and the topic’s potential impact on reducing stigma.

The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard Universityresearchfellowships in plant science. Putnam Fellowships offer excellent opportunities for advanced research and study using the Arboretum’s living collections of trees and shrubs. Scientists and horticulturists with a PhD and who have identified a research project that would utilize the Arboretum’s living collections are encouraged to apply.
Putnam Fellows conduct basic and applied research in the plant sciences. The goal of the program is to facilitate the research use of the Arboretum’s living collections, thereby stimulating their use within the larger scientific community. The research topics of past Putnam Fellows have included taxonomy and systematics, physiological ecology, propagation, plant-insect and/or -pathogen interactions, and collections management. The Putnam Fellowship Program has attracted a diverse array of scholars, and many have gone on to be leaders in academia and public horticulture.
The Arnold Arboretum provides exceptional resources for woody plant research. The living collections, numbering some 15,000 plants, are distinguished as one of the most thoroughly documented collections of temperate woody plants in the world. Taxonomic diversity and breadth within the collection are noteworthy, and the floras of China, Japan, and Korea are particularly well represented. The Harvard Botanical Library contains 250,000 volumes, while the Harvard University Herbaria holds over 5,000,000 specimens. Eligibility
Applications are sought from early- and mid-career individuals with a PhD in plant science, plant ecology, horticulture or related discipline. Applicants should be well positioned to conduct original, independent research and to publish their findings in peer-reviewed publications. Applicants are expected to have the ability to write and converse fluently in English. Fellowship Details
The Putnam Fellowship award provides stipends of up to $40,000 per year, depending on professional status, need, and duration of the fellowship. In addition, modest support is available for research and travel costs. Putnam Fellows are employees of Harvard University during their tenure and are eligible for health insurance benefits.
Putnam Fellows are expected to publish the results of their research in professional or academic journals and present their work at professional meetings and workshops.
Putnam Fellows are also expected to engage fully in the professional activities of the Arnold Arboretum and be in full-time residence during their tenure. While the primary work of Putnam Fellows is conducting original independent research that utilizes the living collections of the Arboretum, Putnam Fellows are also expected to work collaboratively with the staff of the Arboretum on other institutional efforts. Participation as an instructor for Arnold Arboretum education programs is encouraged, as is writing for Arnoldia, the Arboretum’s quarterly magazine.
The fellowship is typically awarded for 1 year, with an option for a second year renewal upon review. Shorter appointments, of no less than 3 months, are also possible. Putnam Fellows must initiate their term at the Arboretum within 12 months of notification. Application Process
Fellowships are awarded through a competitive review process. To be considered for a fellowship, applicants should submit a concise proposal in PDF format that includes the following:
Cover letter. The cover letter should clearly state (i) the applicant’s interest in the program; (ii) the length of the term desired by the applicant; and (iii) the applicant’s contact information.
Research Statement. The statement should be no longer than 4 pages, single-spaced, and should describe the research project the applicant proposes to conduct as a Putnam Fellow. The statement should describe (i) the nature and scope of the proposed research project; (ii) the approach and methods to be employed; (iii) how the living collections of the Arnold Arboretum would be utilized; (iv) all laboratory and equipment requirements; and (v) how the project will advance knowledge about the plant kingdom.
Research Budget. A modest level of funding is available for research and travel costs. Applicants should submit a simple, 1-page budget that itemizes the research and travel costs associated with the proposed project.
Curriculum vitae.
Three letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation should clearly indicate the name, title, mailing address, phone, and email address of the person providing the recommendation. Letters may be sent under separate cover, provided they meet the deadline.
Electronic applications are strongly encouraged. All four components should be combined, in the order listed, in a single PDF document and sent to Michael Dosmann, Curator of the Living Collections, at email. Applications will be accepted between January 1, 2011 and March 1, 2011. Applications post-marked after March 1, 2011 will not be considered.
Interested individuals are encouraged to discuss the program and their research interests with Michael Dosmann prior to submitting an application. Dr. Dosmann can be reached by phone at 617.384.5769, or by email. Selection Criteria
The selection of Putnam Fellows will be based on:
The range and depth of the applicant’s education and professional experience. Applicants will be judged by his/her track record as an independent researcher, and also by his/her collaborations on specific projects and other organizational efforts.
The overall quality of the applicant’s research proposal. The applicant’s research proposal will be assessed with regard to the nature and scope of the work, the approach and methods to be employed, the feasibility of the proposed effort with respect to the term of the fellowship, and how it would advance knowledge about the plant kingdom.
The relevance of the research with respect to the living collections of the Arnold Arboretum. The applicant’s research proposal will also be assessed with respect to how the living collections of the Arboretum would be utilized, and how the project fits into ongoing Arboretum programs.

Doctoral researcher
at the
Department of Marketing and the Business Statistics Research Unit
for the project
Design and validation of models for short-term and long-term
media mix investment optimization
Job description. You prepare a Ph.D. thesis of the research project described below. You contribute to the research of the Department of Marketing and the Business Statistics Research Unit. You write scientific articles on the subject of your thesis. You have a limited number of teaching duties.
Project description. Advertisers face the decision how much to spend on advertising and how to allocate these resources across media types in order to achieve the best results. The project investigates the impact of advertising investments, media mix allocation and advertising share of voice on short-term advertising and brand effects, on consumer activation (gathering extra information, visiting websites and generating word-of-mouth), and on their impact on long-term brand effects. The studies are based on a large, detailed and growing database made available for academic research by a large commercial broadcaster. This database combines data on real-life advertisements: measures of ad recall, recognition and attribution, short-term and long-term brand effects (brand attitude and brand equity) and customer activation measures, and data on advertising spending in all mass media for large samples of consumers over a long period of time and for a great variety of brands, product categories and advertising campaigns. The analysis of this data requires state-of-the-art statistical models due to the presence of categorical outcomes and the resulting need for non-linear statistical models, the multi-level nature of the data and the usefulness of mixture-amount models as a novel technique to assess optimal media mixes for different levels of advertising investments.
Profile and requirements. You have a Masters degree or equivalent in (business) economics, commercial engineering, econometrics or applied statistics. Your research and teaching skills are compatible with the policies of the University of Antwerp. You can provide evidence of an excellent academic record. You can express yourself well in written and spoken English. You share our enthusiasm for scientific research.
Our offer. We offer a full-time position, under the conditions of the Dehousse grants, as a doctoral fellow for two years, with the possibility of renewal for a further two-year period after positive evaluation. The expected date of appointment is September 1st, 2011. Students in the final year of their degree course are allowed to apply.
