Fellowships and Grants for Research on Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy

Fellowships and Grants for Research on Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy
The FSH Society offers basic research grants, research fellowships and postdoctoral fellowships to support research relevant to understanding the molecular genetics and cause of Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD).
To obtain an application, please submit a letter of intent. The letter of intent should contain a single page introductory cover letter plus a one or two page descriptive summary of the proposed research – enough for a decision from the Scientific Advisory Board. A well conceived and tight rationale for a research project can easily lend itself to one page. The letter of intent may be submitted at any time to the FSH Society, attention: Dr. David Housman, Scientific Advisory Board Chairman.
Indirect costs are not included, but fringe benefits are considered part of personnel costs and are included.
Deadlines for receipt of grant, research fellowship and postdoctoral fellowship applications are February 28 and August 31 of each year.
Payment for each year of the award is made in two equal installments - the first on the activation date (or the anniversary thereof) and the second six months after the beginning of the award period (or the anniversary thereof). A five to ten page progress-to-date package will be sent by the grantee at the end of nine months to the SAB for review. The subsequent year(s) of funding will not be activated prior to a review of the nine-month progress report and an explanation of any changes that the work necessitates or changes in specific aims for the next year. The progress report is required at nine months after the start of each award year.
Propagatable reagents and biomaterials, including monoclonal antibodies, recombinant DNAs, cell lines, propagatable cells, and animal models created using FSH Society funds are to be made freely available to other investigators following publication of the relevant paper. The Society's position is that there be no restrictions or proprietary rights in materials produced with our support.
Grant Applications
Support will be given for research projects expected to contribute to identifying and understanding the basic defect in FSHD. Areas of interest include tissue, cell and molecular biology studies of FSHD and the development of animal models for FSHD. Proposals are sought for research that involves isolation and characterization of the causative gene(s) and understanding of the genetic, neuromuscular and developmental mechanisms of the disease. Further, there is interest in the development of gene therapy and other therapeutic programs that may arise from that understanding.
The range of awards for regular research grants is typically between $30,000 and $45,000 per year. Grants are usually for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to two years.
In addition to its regular grants, the Society offers a special Delta Railroad Construction Grant for innovative proposals accelerating the discovery of treatments and a cure for FSHD. A Delta Grant can be funded for one year for up to $35,000.
As the Society has limited funds, our grants are considered "seed money." If the project shows promise, it is hoped that other institutions will fund it thereafter. Many FSH Society fellows and grantees have noted that these grants have enabled them to go on to receive larger grants from other institutions.
Generally, awards do not include salaries of the principal investigator. Indirect costs are not included, but fringe benefits are considered part of personnel costs and can be included.
Grant applications should be completed and sent by e-mail to the FSH Society.
A reference sheet is enclosed with each grant application for use by three or more applicant-selected personnel acquainted with the applicant’s relevant experience.
If reprints are included in the application, please provide electronic copies.
Applications are reviewed by primary reviewers as well as by the FSH Society's Scientific Advisory Board. The Society will notify the applicant about the funding decision by letter only.
Senior Researcher Fellowship and Postdoctoral Fellowship Applications
Support will be given for research projects that contribute to identifying and understanding the basic defect of FSHD.
The range of awards for fellowships is typically between $30,000 and $45,000. Fellowships are usually for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to three years.
Indirect costs are not included, but fringe benefits are considered part of personnel costs and can be included.
Fellowships may be renewed for second and third years, subject to satisfactory progress reports at nine months.
A reference sheet is enclosed with each fellowship application for use by three or more applicant-selected personnel acquainted with the applicant’s relevant experience.
Applications should include the applicant's curriculum vitae, plus that of the research sponsor, and send by email to the FSH Society. If reprints are included in the application, please include provide electronic copies.
The Society will notify the applicant about the funding decision by letter only.

Post-doctoral Fellowships focusing on digital modes of scholarship:

The Center for Digital Learning and Research at Occidental College offers up to three two-year Post-Doctoral Fellowships focusing on digital modes of scholarship. Each Fellow will be expected to explore the scholarly implications of emerging technologies through their own continued research and teaching, and by working closely with faculty to foster digital scholarship projects tied to the curriculum, pedagogy, and research. Areas of disciplinary specialization are open, but might include history, history of art, music, psychology, cognitive science, literature, media studies, geography, sociology, philosophy, political science, and religious and/or cultural studies. Scholars with broad interdisciplinary concerns are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates with experience producing multi-modal scholarship or tools and participation in digital scholarship communities of practice will be favored.
We are looking for scholars who will act as catalysts for identifying and exploring new thinking and experimentation at the intersection of information, technology, and scholarship. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to lead Occidentals engagement with digital scholarship by developing digital tools and services, working with faculty and staff on scholarly projects enhanced by digital materials, social networks, and technologies, and advocating for transformative scholarly practices for faculty and students. Each scholar will be expected to function in a hybrid capacity, operating both in the classroom and on broader institutional and regional digital scholarship projects. Depending on departmental needs and each fellows interests, fellows will have the opportunity to teach in either a first-year seminar through the Colleges Cultural Studies Program ( http://www.oxy.edu/x2312.xml ) or a departmental course. The Center for Digital Learning and Research expects that fellows will continue to keep up with disciplinary research and professionalization, and will support these efforts with limited travel funding and up to twenty-percent research time for projects that explore personal research interests and are likely to help shape the mission and work of the CDLR.
Fellows will share a set of responsibilities that include a number of the following:
1. Collaborate on the design, development, and delivery of an annual Faculty Digital Scholarship Institute centered on digital scholarship and course/research revision and/or redesign. Provide continuing post-institute support for these faculty.
2. Plan and implement a symposium (to be held in the second year of the fellowship) that will bring together faculty from Occidental and other campuses in discussions around issues relevant to digital scholarship.
3. Work with faculty across the curriculum to help them learn and adopt new ways of incorporating digital content and technologies into their teaching and research.
4. Design and develop digital scholarship projects. Such projects might be developed collaboratively, and could focus on mobile devices, geographic information systems, data visualization, social media, data mining, interactive design, or simulation and gaming.
5. Develop and conduct training sessions, workshops, and a speaker series around topics of techno-pedagogy, new modes of digital scholarship and publishing, and the development, use, and assessment of digital content and technologies in instruction and research.
6. Lead the centers effort to explore and support the open access publishing of faculty and student work, including assisting faculty with the development of e-journals and building a platform that highlights student scholarship.
7. Help to expand Occidental's network of regional, national, global, and consortial ties in order to provide-next-generation publishing venues, teaching tools, and collaborative opportunities for Occidental College students and faculty.
Occidental's Center for Digital Learning and Research
Occidental College is in the midst of an ambitious, forward-looking effort to re-imagine its library space and services as an Academic Commons, a scholastic environment that makes visible the institutions commitments as a 21st century liberal arts and sciences college.  A key element in this transformation is the Center for Digital Learning and Research, a campus center designed to enable useful connections among digital content, technologies, and services to support teaching, learning, research, and new types of scholarly work for faculty and students.  The Mellon-funded postdoctoral fellows are expected to demonstrate and support modes of innovation in teaching, learning and scholarship that will help shape and define the Academic Commons.
The center supports faculty in the exploration of new pedagogies and practices, in the use of course management systems and classroom technologies, and in exploration and development of incubator programs, web tools, e-publishing and digital collections. The professional staff actively creates connections among faculty, students and partners beyond College boundaries to foster exploration, experimentation and innovation, especially in new applications of digital technologies to scholarly work.
Occidental College
Occidental College (http://www.oxy.edu/x92.xml ) is in Eagle Rock, a neighborhood in the northeastern corner of the city of Los Angeles (http://www.oxy.edu/x90.xml). The College offers a unique combination of a rigorous academic program, small size, a diverse student body, and all the resources of Los Angeles. An interdisciplinary, hands-on approach to the liberal arts takes place in a close-knit community of excellent teacher-scholars and involved students that focus on creativity, academic accomplishment, civic engagement and making a difference.
Occidentals location in a world city on the Pacific Ocean and near the mountains and deserts of Southern California offers ready access to the broadest array of activities and proximity to internationally important libraries and museums, not the least of which are the Huntington Library, the Getty Center, the University of California Los Angeles, the University of Southern California, Cal Tech, and the Claremont Colleges.
Salary and Benefits
The Fellow will be considered a regular (12-month) employee of Occidental College with a salary of $50,000 plus the standard benefits and leave accrued by employees (http://www.oxy.edu/x3016.xml ), as well as limited relocation expense support.
Application Requirements
In addition to a letter of interest, which should address how to best foster digital scholarship projects tied to teaching and learning in the context of a liberal arts college, please include a current CV and three confidential letters of recommendation.
