Australia Expands University Exchange Programs With China

Exchange Programs | An innovative exchange program for Australian and Chinese university leaders will be expanded with funding announced in Beijing today by Minister for Tertiary Education, Senator Chris Evans.

Senator Evans said the Gillard Government would contribute $100,000 to expand the China-Australia Executive Leadership Program (CAELP) – a joint initiative of Universities Australia (UA) and the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE).

“This is an excellent example of meaningful cooperation between our countries in education,” Senator Evans said.

“The Leadership Program offers participants valuable insights into each country’s cultures of teaching, learning and research.

“The funding will allow the program to continue as a foundation for academic and research collaboration and ongoing staff and student exchanges, providing benefit to both nation’s education and research sectors.”

Senator Evans said the highly successful exchange program has given more than 100 university leaders the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of leading practice in each other’s higher education system.

One of the alumni of the program is the Chinese Vice Minister for Education, Hao Ping.

Earlier this year UA and CEAIE agreed to a program for 2011 for eight Australian and 16 Chinese universities.

The Government funding will support the doubling of the number of participating Australian universities to 16 for 2011 and 2013, and will help to enrich the experience for Chinese participants.

“This program is a flagship initiative of the longstanding relationship between the organizations, helping to build strong person-to-person links with our Chinese counterparts,” Senator Evans said.

Gioverment of Canada | The University of Waterloo is receiving Government of Canada funding worth $200,000 to support its student exchange project, LEIF: A Multicultural Exploration into Research and Education for Surface Computing. Mr. Peter Braid, Member of Parliament for Kitchener-Waterloo made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.

“Talented and creative workers are a critical asset to a successful economy,” said Mr.Braid. “These international placements will help students gain the competitive advantage they need for the jobs of the future.”

The project will support student and faculty exchanges between Canadian and European post-secondary institutions to improve knowledge and understanding of computer technology. This important field includes multi-touch smartphones and digital wall and tabletop systems that provide means for accessing and sharing information and media.

“It is through projects like LEIF that our government is demonstrating its commitment to enriching academic excellence in Canada. Our government believes that science, technology and innovation are vital to stimulating productivity, competitiveness and growth,” added Mr. Braid.

The International Academic Mobility initiative contributes to the development of a highly skilled Canadian labour force by supporting the participation of universities and colleges across Canada in international education and student exchange partnerships. Backgrounder

The International Academic Mobility initiative offers international learning opportunities to students through student mobility and academic cooperation exchanges between post-secondary institutions in Canada, the United States, Mexico and the European Union. There are three program areas under the initiative: the Program for North American Mobility in Higher Education; the Canada-European Union Program for Co-operation in Higher Education, Training and Youth; and the Special Initiatives Program.

Since the initiative was launched in 1995, approximately 400 Canadian university and college students per year have gained international skills through study experiences abroad. New education technologies and distance learning allow students to benefit from the international linkages established under various mobility projects.
