Study Program in Japan

Scholarship Beasiswa | AUN/SEED-Net Short-term Study Program in Japan

Scholarship Description :

JAPAN - It is essential for AUN/SEED-Net students to conduct high quality doctoral thesis research of international standard and to complete doctoral degrees within three years. The AUN/SEED-Net Project thus provides thesis research assistance for AUN/SEED-Net students through the joint thesis research supervision from Japanese Supporting Universities. To facilitate this assistance, Collaborative ResearchProgram has been introduced, in which each Host Institution, in consultation with Japanese Supporting Universities identifies a few well-defined and focused Collaborative Research Themes (or research umbrellas), each of which is a sub-area of research defined by several key words leading to a number of interrelated and progressively conducted possible thesis research topics. Then some of those research themes/topics will be carried out by AUN/SEED-Net students under joint supervision of Host Institutions and Japanese Supporting Universities, while other research topics are encouraged to be carried out by graduate students of Member Institutions as well.

The Short-Term Study Program in Japan aims to provide such support for students in the Doctoral Degree Sandwich Program. During three years of scholarship period, students can visit their Japanese co-advisors once or twice, for a total duration of eight months to receive thesis research supervision.

Objectives
  1. To carry out joint thesis research supervision by Japanese co-advisors in Japan.

Selayang Pandang Overview
Japan - UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme

In April 1996, the UN Secretary–General inaugurated UNU-IAS as an in–house community of scholars mandated to research issues located at the intersection between societal and natural systems. The Institute`s mission is to advance knowledge and to promote learning for policy making to meet the challenges of sustainable development. As an advanced studies institute, UNU-IAS is forward-looking and multidisciplinary.

Since October 2000, UNU-IAS offers Postdoctoral Fellowships for recent PhD graduates to provide them with the opportunity to put the knowledge and expertise acquired during their doctoral research to practical policy-relevant use. So far, over 40 Fellows from some 20 countries have passed through the Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme. Of those completing the programme about one third have been women, and developing country participants have outnumbered developed country participants.

Around two Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded each year for a period of 12 months, starting in September.

The Fellowship Programme provides the successful applicant with a unique opportunity to:
  • develop and advance their research under the supervision of a UNU-IAS faculty member and contribute to the overall research agenda of the Institute;
  • widen their research interests and professional networks by working in the international and multi-disciplinary context of UNU-IAS, and with its wider network of Japanese universities and research institutes, as well as international collaborators;
  • become exposed to the workings of the international and multilateral policy process and the broader UN system; and
  • link with other UNU-IAS and UNU PhD and Postdoctoral Fellows.
The Fellows are resident at UNU-IAS in Yokohama or UNU-IAS OUIK in Kanazawa, Japan for the full term of the fellowship. This gives them the opportunity to gain from the broader research programme of lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences arranged by UNU-IAS. The Institute`s close links with Japanese affiliated professors and visiting professors from key universities and think tanks in Japan also allow Fellows to link into the broader Japanese academic and research community.

Field of Research
The purpose of the UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowship is to provide young scholars and policy-makers, especially from the developing world, with a multidisciplinary context within which to pursue advanced research and training that are of professional interest to the applicant and of direct relevance to the research agenda of UNU-IAS. Research proposals for UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowships should therefore relate clearly to one of the current research areas of the Institute, as well as aim to be policy-relevant. Research proposals are invited in the following areas:
  • Science and Technology for Sustainable Societies
  • Sustainable Urban Futures
  • Biodiplomacy Initiative
  • Sustainable Development Governance
  • Traditional Knowledge Initiative
  • Global Marine Governance
Eligibility and Conditions
Applicants must have obtained a Ph.D. (or at least successfully defended their doctoral dissertation), in an area broadly associated with the UNU-IAS thematic focus, prior to the application deadline. UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded for a period of 12 months. The starting date of the Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme is 1 September. Successful applicants are required to be in Yokohama by this date. Residency in Yokohama for the full duration of the fellowship is required.

Fellows are provided with their own desk in a dedicated study room in the Institute, administrative support and desktop computing. Fellows have access to the UNU Library in Tokyo which includes an excellent collection of UN documents. They also have access via the UNU Library to various Japanese university libraries and computer databases. A limited range of other, more specialized computer hardware and software may also be available.

The fellowship provides a monthly stipend of JPY300,000- 360,000 (depending on experience) from which a monthly usage charge for accommodation is deducted (see below). A one-time-only settle-in-allowance of JPY 80,000 will be granted to each Fellow at the beginning of the programme for relocation, adjustment expenses, ground transportation and incidental costs. UNU-IAS provides Fellows with a return air ticket between his/her country of residence and Narita Airport.

Eligibility for a second 12-month appointment may be considered based on the Fellow`s performance.

ACCEPTANCE OF FOREIGN STUDENTS IN JAPANESE IINIVERSITIES
In order to enter the postgraduate course of the Japanese universities, all Japanese and foreign students must pass the entrance examination given by each university.

Most of the Japanese universities give the same level entrance examination as Japanese students even for the foreign students, for which ample knowledge of Japanese language is required. However, some universities in Japan are active in accepting foreign students, especially in the field of natural science of the postgraduate course, and admit their entrance to the university tentatively only by the examination of papers, and let such students, whose knowledge of Japanese language is insufficient, study Japanese language in the special course in the university. Then, the special entrance examination, mainly for Japanese language and an interview of the professor in charge, is given by such universities to the students who were admitted entering the university tentatively, and those who passed such special entrance examination are admitted entering the university as a regular student of the masters course.

But, with the sharp increase of applicants both from inside and outside, this has undergone substantial changes. Each university selects the students strictly through the entrance examination being the same level as that given to Japanese students and the proficiency of Japanese language is becoming an important factor to be regular students of the master’s course year by year.

However, several private universities, namely Waseda University, Keio University, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Hoshi University (Pharmacy) still accept foreign students through good relationship between students and the professor in charge. Several ways for building a good relationship with the professor in charge are to get acquaintance with him before coming to Japan and to show the superior and excellent research plans as well as to make the professor convinced that you will be an outstanding student thereby succeeding in the entrance examination of the master’s course despite insufficiency of Japanese language to some extent.

Now, some national universities, namely Tokyo Institute of Technology etc. have an International Graduate Course in the postgraduate program. The entrance examination and lectures are given in English.

In the International Graduate Course those universities do not necessarily require how many points of TOEFL must be possessed by students, but students are asked to have the ability of communication/conversation in English satisfactorily. However, it is to their advantage if students have more than 550 according to TOEFL score record or the same level in other English proficiency tests.

MASTER’S DEGREE IN JAPANESE UNIVERSITY
According to the educational system of Japan, the course for a master’s degree requires at least two years for study after graduation from a university (i.e. after completion of the whole course of 16 years conducted at school – 6 years in primary school, each 3 years in middle and high school and 4 years in faculty course of university).

Those who have studied in such course for the required terms of study, obtaining the necessary credits, and have passed the terminal examination after submission of their theses, will be given the master’s degree.
