Scholarsip Beasiswa | PhD Research Fellow at Center for Accelerator-based Research and Energy Physics (SAFE), Norway

Scholarship Application Deadline: 7 December, 2010

Scholarship Description: The group’s research is focused on the study of atomic nuclei under extreme conditions, e.g. nuclei at high excitation energy at the transition from quantum order to chaos, of exotic nuclei with an unusual ratio of protons and neutrons, or of very (super)heavy nuclei. To obtain experimental information under such conditions is crucial in order to constrain and improve theoretical models of the nuclear many-body system. Experiments are performed both at the Oslo Cyclotron and at accelerator facilities abroad.

The goal of the PhD project is the measurement of electromagnetic transition probabilities from short-lived excited states in exotic neutron-rich nuclei. An experiment will be performed at the Grand Accélérateur National d’Ions Lourds (GANIL) in Caen (France), where neutron-rich nuclei will be produced using fusion-fission reactions. Transition rates will be obtained by measuring the lifetimes of excited states, typically some 10-12 s, in a variety of fission fragments. The experiment will be performed within a large international collaboration. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to take a leading role throughout the entire project, which includes the preparation and realization of the experiment, data analysis and interpretation, and publication of the results.

Scholarship | PhD Research Fellowship in Physics (Complex Systems)

Scholarship | Norway, PhD Research Fellowship in Physics (Complex Systems)

Fellowship Application Deadline: 17 November, 2010

Fellowship Description: The Department og Physics has experimental as well as theoretical research activities in a broad range of subfields (see http://www.physics.uio.no/research/), with a stated ambition of attaining excellence in its main fields of research. At the department there is a scientific staff of 47 tenured positions, 8 adjunct professors, and 21 fellowships for PhD-students. In addition there are 52 temporary positions based on external financing. There is a technical/administrative staff of 38 persons. The teaching at the department is related to the degrees of bachelor, master and PhD, currently with about 125 master- and 75 PhD students

Requirements:

The candidate must have a background corresponding to a masters in physics and be inclined towards simulation and theory, which will be the general subject of the thesis work.

Applicants may submit a project proposal for the qualifying work during the program. The project proposal should include research topic, main issues, as well as choice of theory and method.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An approved plan for the research training, including a project outline, must be submitteed no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission must be approved within three months.

[Germany] Postdoctoral Fellow in Exoplant Research

HAT-South Postdoctoral Fellow in Exoplanet Research

Scholarship Information: HAT-South is the first global network dedicated to transiting planet search. With three stations around the globe (Australia, Namibia and Chile) and 24 telescopes, providing high-precision, 24-hour data coverage on millions of stars brighter than 14th magnitude it started operation in late 2009 and is now in the full data production phase. We are searching for a postdoctoral research fellow who would participate actively in the HAT-South program at the stimulating work environment of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg, Germany. The fellow would be part of an international team, consisting of members from the partner institutions: MPIA, CfA and the Australian National University, and would work closely together with Cristina Afonso, Thomas Henning and Gaspar Bakos.

The successful candidate would take part in many aspects of the project, such as: overseeing operations, data flow and analysis, related software development, follow-up observations (photometry and spectroscopy), interpretation of the data, and communication of the scientific results. The candidate should have experience with photometry and time-series analysis, as well as the necessary programming and observational skills.

The successful candidate will have privileged access to the twin 8.4 meter Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona, the 2.2 m MPG telescope on La Silla, the 2.2 and 3.5 m telescopes on Calar Alto through MPIA GTO.

Requirements
Applicants should have an advanced degree in the related fields: physics or astronomy.

Fellowship Application Deadline: 30 November 2010
