Postdoctoral Positions in Systems Biology of Metabolism and Ageing

[Netherlands] - 13 PhD Student/Postdoctoral Positions in Systems Biology of Metabolism and Ageing

[Netherlands] Scholarship includes research in Network-based statistical inference

Scholarship Description: The Systems Biology Centre for Metabolism and Ageing (SBC-EMA) is one of three national systems biology centres funded by the Dutch Science Foundation (NWO). It is a joint effort between the University Medical Centre Groningen and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Groningen. The Centre will be housed in the new building of ERIBA, the European Research Institute on the Biology of Ageing. In SBC-EMA scientists from various disciplines will collaborate. The University of Groningen offers excellent facilities for research and training.

Project description :

Our goal is to unravel the intricate relationship between metabolism and the biology of ageing. This relationship, which has been conserved throughout evolution, is bidirectional: metabolism affects the ageing of an organism, while the metabolic system itself declines under the influence of ageing. Both metabolism and ageing are systems properties that are affected by a large number of processes at the molecular, cellular and organ level. Hence a full understanding of metabolism, ageing and their interaction necessitates a systems-biology approach. We use the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the mouse as model organisms. With an interdisciplinary team of scientists, we will use various approaches of systems biology, including (i) high-throughput omics techniques, (ii) dedicated quantitative experimentation, (iii) top-down computational approaches, and (iv) bottom-up modelling approaches.

The UMCG and the Faculty of Mathemathics and Natural Sciences are recruiting 13 PhD students/postdocs from various disciplines for SBC-EMA. Projects include:

Study Subject: Biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, bioinformatics, statistics, mathematics and theoretical biology
Employer: University of Groningen
Level: PhD and Postdoctoral

* Network-based statistical inference (1 position)
* Computational, global modeling of ageing (1 position)
* A concerted, multi-group effort towards solving the ageing puzzle in yeast (4 positions)
* A multi-scale Systems Biology approach to unravel the relation between calorie restriction, physical activity and biological ageing of mice (4 positions)
* Proteomics and metabolomics (2 positions)
* Metabolism and healthy ageing (1 positions).

The Max Planck Research Award 2011 will be awarded in the area of engineering sciences in the field of Intelligent Systems.

[GERMANY] Max Planck Research Award for International Researchers and Scholars

[Job Description] : Excellent scientists and scholars of all nationalities who are expected to continue producing outstanding academic achievements in international collaboration – not least with the assistance of this award – are eligible to be nominated for the Max Planck Research Award.

Jobs |On an annually-alternating basis, the call for nominations addresses areas within the natural and engineering sciences, the life sciences, and the humanities.

Intelligent systems integrate information acquisition and processing, as well as target-oriented action, also under diffuse boundary conditions. Research in engineering science that deals with intelligent systems focuses on, among other things, making rational and human cognitive performance and procedures available for artificial inanimate and bio-hybrid systems by machines.

Every year, the Humboldt Foundation and the Max Planck Society grant two research awards to one researcher working in Germany and one researcher working abroad. The Presidents/Vice Chancellors of universities and the heads of research institutions in Germany are eligible to make nominations (c.f. list of eligible nominators). Direct applications are not accepted. As a rule, each award is endowed with 750,000 EUR and may be used over a period of three to a maximum of five years to fund research chosen by the award winner.

Requirements
1. The nominee must be recognised internationally as an outstandingly qualified academic (e.g. awards, positive responses to publications, etc.).
2. Expectation of continued outstanding academic achievements in international collaboration ? not least with the assistance of the award.
3. Nomination by a person entitled to make the nomination (c.f. list of eligible nominators).
4. Expert reviews by important international and German collaborative partners and/or academics.
5. The Humboldt Foundation assumes that candidates will abide by the Rules of Good Scientific Practice during the application and sponsorship periods.

The deadline for nominations is 20 October 2010.

Information Systems Scholarship Programme 2011, Australia

The Scholarship is available for the normal expected duration of the initial course offered to the successful Scholarship recipient

Scholarship Description: The scholarship is valued at $5,000 in total and will be awarded to students over the period of the original course that the scholarship was offered, for example if it is a three year course they will receive $2,000 in their first year and then $1,500 in the subsequent years.

The Scholarship will be available for the normal expected duration of the initial undergraduate course offered to the successful Scholarship recipient. For example, if the normal expected duration is 600 credits of study, the Scholarship will cover 600 credit points only.

Once the Information Systems Scholarship Programme has been accepted, the scholarship will commence from the first semester of study.

The cash payment of the Scholarship will be paid to the student’s nominated bank account normally in two instalments (pro rata if part-time) per year. Payments occur post census date (Semester 1 approx mid-end April) and in second semester payment will occur post census date (approx mid-end Sept). If the scholarship is commended in Semester 2 then there will be one payment.

Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must meet ALL of the following criteria to be considered for an Information Systems Scholarship Programme:
• Be an international student and hold a valid Student Visa – Higher Education (Subclass 573)
• Have received a Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) into an eligible undergraduate business degree at Curtin University in 2011
• Commencing the first semester of their first undergraduate degree at Curtin University of Technology in semester 1, 2011.
