Scholarship Application Deadline: December 16, 2010

Study Subject: Public Health
Employer:
Umeå University
Level: PhD

Scholarship Description: It is widely recognised that the world’s population is in a continuous state of demographic, epidemiological and health transition, not least as a result of increasing globalisation. It is also true that different areas of the world and particular countries encounter these transitions in various ways and at different times. Although some generic principles underlying these processes were set out in the 1970s, there remains a lack of evidence-based analyses from settings which have already experienced major transitions as a basis for informing understanding and policy in contemporary transitions. The aim of this PhD project is to make use of well-established population-based data (for example, but not exclusively, from Swedish historical population registers) in analyses designed to inform policy in today’s transitional populations.

Qualifications
Applicants must 1) hold or anticipate receiving within the next months a University degree equivalent to a European University Master degree in the field of Public Health or equivalent (240 hp) or 2) have 120 Swedish (old) credits (Swe. poäng; corresponding to 180 ECTS credits) of higher education studies in Public Health or equivalent taken before July 1, 2007. Prior qualifications are likely to include graduate and post-graduate attainment in discipline(s) relevant to the practice of global public health, including medicine and well-developed skills in quantitative analysis. Applicants are expected to be interested in global health issues and be willing to work as part of interdisciplinary and cross-cultural teams within the Centre for Global Health Research. This may involve some collaboration in low and middle-income countries, experience of which is desirable. The post will be based in Umeå, Sweden, but may involve some international travel. A good working knowledge of English is essential.

[Scholarship] Postgraduate in Geobiosphere Science at Lund University

[Sweden] - Postgraduate scholarship in Geobiosphere Science at Lund University

The Scholarship :
The PhD project will focus on studies of marine sediments obtained from different upwelling regions across the globe. The aim of the project is to study relationships between primary productivity and the benthic environment in upwelling regions since the last deglaciation. We have previously documented large variations in primary productivity off NW Africa, so large that the benthic life was affected to a significant extent. The task at hand is to investigate if this was the case in other major upwelling areas as well. The project involves: sediment sampling, different kinds of laboratory work such as grain-size analyses, analyses of biogenic silica, organic carbon together with a large amount of micropaleontological analyses, foremost benthic foraminifera but also other groups of microfossils may come to mind. Participation in sea-going expeditions might be required.

The project belongs to LUCCI (Center for Studies of Carbon Cycle and Climate Interactions, LUCCI) at Lund University.

[Sweden] - PhD Position in Chemical Ecology and Ecotoxicology

[Sweden] - Scholarship for doctoral studies in the department of Biology, Lund University

[Sweden] Scholarship Description:The aim of the proposed PhD project is to increase the knowledge about the reproductive biology and chemical ecology of species within a spruce seed-feeding guild of insects. Wood production has a large socioeconomic role in Sweden and will also be important for the sequestration of carbon from the atmosphere in the future. Seed orchards serve an important role for the production of high-quality seeds and thus in the generation of new forests. However, insects are chronic pests and cause great losses in seed production. Therefore, more knowledge is needed about the most important insect species in order to be able to design reliable and sustainable monitoring and control strategies. Within the project different aspects of chemical ecology of the target species will be studied, e.g. the role of flower odours for orientation and selection of oviposition sites, pheromone communication for mate location, and the role of odours for attracting natural enemies. Also studies on dispersal, competition and climate-induced modifications of life history strategies might be included.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements
Applicants should have a Master´s degree or equivalent in ecology, entomology, forestry or similar areas, and preferably with competence in chemistry/chemical ecology. Laboratory work will include insect rearing, chemical analyses, electrophysiology and behavioural assays. Fieldwork is an essential part of the project and the applicant should preferably have a driving licence. Skills in planning experiments and proven abilities to adapt to current knowledge of ecological areas will be of merit. The project will involve teamwork and will require good collaborative skills. Fieldwork may require flexible working hours. A very good knowledge of written and spoken English is required.

[Sweden] - Postdoctoral Position on Aerosol, Vegetation and Climate Modelling

[Beasiswa] - Postdoctoral Position on Aerosol, Vegetation and Climate Modelling, Sweden

Study Subject: Environmental and Climate Research
Employer: Lund University
Level: Postdoctoral

Scholarship Description:The employee will conduct research within the strategic and cross-cutting research platform of Modelling the Regional and Global Earth System? (MERGE) at Lund University. MERGE involves also several other Swedish universities as well as the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI). MERGE focuses on the development of a new generation of climate models and their application to a range of problems and questions related to regional and global climate change and its impacts.
MERGE is a strategic research area at Lund University, with particular emphasis on the terrestrial biosphere as a part of the climate system. One key question is how vegetation-related trace gas emissions of biogenic volatile organic substances (BVOC) give rise to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in the atmosphere and its interaction with cloud and radiation related physical processes. Although BVOC are a dominant source of SOA particles there are a range of important uncertainties related to BVOC emission and SOA spatial and temporal patterns. Climate models are still in initial stages of modelling these processes.
At Lund University, there are strong research areas on (i) detailed aerosol studies (Nuclear physics), with focus on experimental field and laboratory studies, and (ii) process-based vegetation and BVOC modelling (ENES).
The position is targeted at process-based modelling of BVOC-SOA interactions, and involves research linking detailed aerosol properties? and aerosol-cloud interactions, process-based terrestrial modelling, and, not least, incorporation of results in advanced climate modelling.

The position will be at the Centre for environmental and climate research at Lund University, and affiliated with the strategic research area MERGE. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with the Lund University Nuclear Physics and the Department of Earth and Ecosystem Sciences.

Eligible candidates
will hold a Ph.D. in Atmospheric or Geobiosphere Sciences or another relevant science field
have defended their thesis less than three years ago
have previous experience of the development and application of climate models
sufficient programming and computing skills to undertake the required work
adequate skills in written and spoken English
The following additional qualifications are considered advantageous:
documented knowledge of atmospheric chemistry, aerosol studies, biogeochemistry or similar fields
prior experience with the model system EC-EARTH or its relevant components (IFS, TM5, M7).
