PhD Candidate ‘Multiscale Modelling of Thrombosis’, Netherlands

Scholarship Description: You will develop a multiscale model for thrombosis, validate it against in-vitro and in-vivo data, and apply it to thrombosis in cranial aneurism after stenting. The multiscale model will be based on Lattice Boltzmann models at multiple spatio-temporal scales, explicitly modelling suspensions of red blood cells and platelets at the smallest scales, including their interactions via chemical signalling, and coupling to macro-scale models of blood flow and thrombosis. The research will be done in close collaboration with a number of laboratories throughout Europe in the context of the EU-funded Thrombus project. Through this collaboration detailed in-vitro and in-vivo data will be available for validation of the models, as well as clinical datasets of intracranial aneurisms in which the multiscale model of thrombosis will be applied. It is anticipated that the suspension simulations will require peta-scale computing, and besides the multiscale modelling and biomedical application, an important focus of the research will be on massively parallel computing, exploiting high-end computing capabilities as offered through PRACE.

Requirements

Candidates should have an MSc degree in Computational Science, (Computational) Physics, Biomedical Engineering or related disciplines. Candidates should have a proven affinity with modelling and simulation, and should possess related computing skills, especially in parallel computing. Knowledge of Lattice Boltzmann models is an advantage, but not a requirement. The same applies to biological and physiological knowledge. However, a strong affinity with these topics is expected from the candidate. Moreover, the candidate should be able to work in an international multidisciplinary team, and have a strong affinity for biomedical research. Moreover, given the nature of the Thrombus project, candidates should be willing to participate in all project related activities. Applicants are kindly requested to motivate why they have chosen to apply for this specific position.
Scholarship Application Deadline: 10 December 2010
