Scholarship Application Deadline: 17 December, 2010
Scholarship Description: The position is connected to the project ”Self-replication of chirality in chemistry”. The project is part of an emerging top-tier research environment, promoted by the University of Oslo. The proposed research aims to learn how to propagate stereochemical information for a directed self-replication. In our research group, we have recently identified a set of organic transformations with high potential for self-replication. Thus, newly formed chiral molecules become suitable replicative catalysts for asymmetric processes. Knowledge of the key attributes of this asymmetric catalysis is needed to form better models of self-replication of chirality. Solution experiments are predicted to provide insights into the mechanism characteristics of self-replication and learn to take advantage of these to design such asymmetric processes. The work encompasses primarily experimental chemistry, characterisation, NMR studies, and will be extended to theoretical studies.
Requirements:
Applicants should have a MSc. or equivalent degree in Chemistry.
The selected candidate should be motivated, talented, and curiosity driven individual with a strong background in organic chemistry. A genuine interest in chemistry in broader perspective and working in an interdisciplinary manner will be an advantage.
A good command of English is required of all students attending the University of Oslo.
