Scholarship Beasiswa | MSc Scholarships in Management and Information Systems, University of Manchester, UK

Overview
The School of Environment and Development invites applications for a fully-funded scholarship for candidates from developing countries for Master`s study by distance learning on the MSc Management and Information Systems. The scholarship will cover all study costs including tuition and examining fees and course material costs.

MSc Management and Information Systems
The MSc in M&IS develops the “hybrid” mix of management and information systems skills that we know from experience is essential to the successful and strategic application of information and communication technologies by today’s organizations.
It is designed to develop two groups of participants in developing and transitional economies: functional managers who wish to take greater control over, and make a more direct contribution to, change in their organizations via the development and implementation of information systems; and information systems professionals who wish to improve the success rate of the information systems they develop or use, and who may also wish to upgrade their management skills and knowledge.
The programme is offered by IDPM`s Development Informatics Group, with staff members contributing to the University`s Centre for Development Informatics.

Who studies on this programme?
The MSc M&IS programme is available through distance learning so that practitioners can study while continuing to work in their ongoing professional roles, in the public, private and civil society sectors, or in roles in international organizations, agencies or NGOs. Students work alongside their MSc study, and complete the programme part-time, typically in about two-and-a-half years.

Who is eligible to apply for a scholarship?
The scholarships are intended to support students from developing countries who would not otherwise be able to study for a UK qualification. Applicants should:
  1. Be a national of and resident in a developing country of Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America or Oceania.
  2. Have at least two years` work experience in a post relevant to their MSc M&IS studies.
  3. Hold a UK second class honours, upper division, or above, or its international equivalent, in their Bachelor`s degree.
Applicants must not have previously studied in a developed country (short/language courses excluded).

How to apply
You should apply in the normal way for the MSc Management & Information Systems: Change and Development by Distance Learning. Use the following link to apply online:
Apply online at http://www.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/howtoapply/
In the online application form, instead of a `Statement of Purpose`, you should include an original 500-word (maximum) statement with your application specifying how studying the MSc M&IS by distance learning will contribute to your professional and personal development.
This document must be included in your application and also e-mailed separately to Mr Daniel Chung, SED Recruitment and Admissions Assistant, at: daniel.chung@manchester.ac.uk.

Scholarship Beasiswa | PhD Positions: Mixed-Metal Doped Semiconductor Oxides for Photocatalytic Removal of Aqueous Nitrates, UK

Scholarship Description: Provision of clean drinking water is a primary concern to those living in both developing and developed nations. The range of treatments is reviewed in a recent book chapter by our group. In addition to reagents of an organic nature, nitrates are also of increasing concern in areas of extensive use of soluble nitrate fertilizers. Catalytic hydrogenation over noble/base metals combinations, usually based on Pd show some promise in terms of rates of nitrate removal but are usually limited in terms of the selectivity required to avoid undesired nitrite and ammonium formation. Several studies concerning the potential photocatalytic reduction of nitrates in solution have been reported, however, the selectivities, are far from the desired values. There is a limited amount of literature dealing with photocatalytic nitrate removal and the potential exploitable nature of this methodology makes it appear ideal for further, more extensive study. A key objective would be to develop active, selective and robust, metal modified semiconductor based photocatalysts which would could be activated in the visible range and consume hole scavengers based on organic pollutants that would be present at appropriate levels in ground waters also contaminated by nitrate. This opens up an interesting opportunity which might exploit properties of Au in terms of visible light activation with a robust noble metal. Given that Pd is the most effective nitrite reducing catalyst in the aqueous phase hydrogenation reaction, this would be an appropriate starting point.

    Application Procedure
You should apply for MSc with a view to transfer to PhD in Chemistry, to ensure that your application is passed to the correct College for processing. Please note, you should apply at least 4 days before the deadline to allow us to contact you for further information, if required. Beasiswa Baru : GASMEMS Marie-Curie Initial Training Network: Postdoctoral Researchers, France

Overview : The Knudsen pump is a pump without moving parts that works for a gas under rarefied conditions (at low pressure and/or at micro scale). Typical Knudsen pumps are long channels with a periodic structure consisting of alternately arranged narrow and wide channels, with a periodic temperature distribution. An alternative solution consists in replacing the narrow segments with curved channels with the same width as the wide segments. Numerical results obtained by the DSMC method are reported in the literature for such a configuration (see Aoki K. et al., “A diffusion model for rarefied flows in curved channels”, Multiscale Model. Simul., 2008, 6(4), pp. 1281-1316). The goal of the project is to design and fabricate a prototype of Knudsen pump based on this principle, and from its experimental analysis to discuss/validate the numerical simulations results.

Based on the theoretical models from the literature, and in collaboration with Prof. Aoki from the
Department of Mechanical Engineering and Science at Kyoto University, a first prototype at millimetric scale and low pressure will be designed. This prototype will be manufactured at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The experimental facilities at the National Institute of Applied Sciences of Toulouse will be adapted for controlling the Knudsen pump and measuring its performances. The experimental analysis should lead to improved models and optimisation of the pump at millimetric scale.

At the end of the project, a Knudsen pump at micro scale should be designed, taking into account the constraints of microfabrication. For this step, the researcher will benefit from the expertise of the Laboratory for Analysis and Architecture of Systems in Toulouse, LAAS, Toulouse
(http://www.laas.fr) which is specialised in manufacturing microdevices and microsensors.

This project is a collaboration between 2 GASMEMS partners: the National Institute of Applied
Sciences (INSA), Toulouse, France, (http://www.insa-toulouse.fr/en/index.html), which specialises in experimental analysis of gas microflows, and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT-IMTV Institute for Micro Process Engineering, http://www.kit.edu/) which is specialised in manufacturing micro heat exchangers, fluidic micro-devices and chemical micro-reactors. In addition, the project will benefit from the expertise of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Science, Kyoto University, in the field of numerical simulation of Knudsen pumps and from LAAS Toulouse in the field of microfabrication techniques. The researcher will spend the majority of the time at INSA Toulouse, with a 5-month exchange at KIT.

Journalism Exchange Program at U of I

In the liberal arts college setting, a shift has been made to allow for students to get a more hands on education in the field(s) of their choice. Whether it be in a student teaching or mentoring program, or applied practicums in students medias, different majors stress the importance of getting 'real world' experience to help better prepare them for a professional career.

One state school has developed a program that focuses on giving its journalism students every possible opportunity to excel in a hands on field-experience program.

The University of Iowa's School of Journalism and Mass Communication has implemented a program called North American Environmental Journalism Project (VITAL), which is funded by the US Department of Education, to help give their journalism students a 'leg-up' on other student journalists.

This program is a negotiated exchange consortium with seven different schools from the United States, Canada and Mexico. The program allows for students to study, report on, and develop an awareness for environmental journalism, with special emphasis on water resource and water sustainability issues. The program also hopes to allow for students to gain a sense of cultural awareness and still enhancing their journalistic skills.

Members of the student exchange program focus on projects in specific areas of concern in their given geographical region. The students research these issues and then post forums in a website to share information and publish their work. Some may also work with broadcast news/production and shoot, edit, and stream video on news and campus TV stations.

With exchanges between schools on the North American continent, the goal is to promote awareness for issues going on close to home and to form a sense of community among the students involved.

The University of Iowa has chosen this program to focus on environmental journalism, but students do not have to a background in biology or environmental issues in order to participate.

This program, however, is not unique to its kind. Other small liberal arts institutions also encourage study abroad courses during the semester, or for partial semesters. But this program in particular focuses on cultivating students' abilities in a specific area to give them hands on experience for their intended profession. Getting real, hands on training makes students applying for their first jobs in a given field more attractive candidates to employers...which is the goal of any school wishing to educate students eager to enter the workforce.
