Applying for a Research Grant: Explaining the Main Steps

[Scholarship] - Applying for a Research Grant: Explaining the Main Steps

[Scholarship] - The significance of scientific grants for the society and the scientific community cannot be disputed. If not for the grants, most researches would have stayed at the stage of proposals. The information on available organizations, funds, and grants can be found on the internet, and in that regard, it cannot be said that such information is lacking. Nevertheless, all information on the internet can be related to specific organizations, which requirements might be individual. Thus, this article will attempt to summarize the common elements of the grant application process, for those who want to have a general idea on scientific grants’ requirements. Competition Most grants are provided through a competition, which conditions and dates are usually pronounced on the websites of their respective organizations. The first step usually implies registration through submitting a grant application. The applications usually contain, in addition to personal information, the applicants’ academic and career achievements, and other documentations unrelated to the financial aspects of the research, e.g. permits, consents, recommendations, other grants, etc. Research The plan of the research is usually to be evaluated by an independent board or commission. Such plan usually includes a submitted proposal. The proposal for research might contain elements such as the following: 1. Indication of the originality of the research. 2. The aim of the research, i.e. the hypotheses, the problem statement, the practical application. 3. Indication of the research significance, such significance might be limited to the local community, the field in which the organization providing the grant operates, or the society in general. It should be noted that the grant is not an award and will not likely to be used as a method to earn a good payday. Accordingly, the salary paid for the researcher will not exceed the salary of a position with similar qualification in the institution in which the research will be conducted.
