Postdoctoral Positions in Systems Biology of Metabolism and Ageing

[Netherlands] - 13 PhD Student/Postdoctoral Positions in Systems Biology of Metabolism and Ageing

[Netherlands] Scholarship includes research in Network-based statistical inference

Scholarship Description: The Systems Biology Centre for Metabolism and Ageing (SBC-EMA) is one of three national systems biology centres funded by the Dutch Science Foundation (NWO). It is a joint effort between the University Medical Centre Groningen and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Groningen. The Centre will be housed in the new building of ERIBA, the European Research Institute on the Biology of Ageing. In SBC-EMA scientists from various disciplines will collaborate. The University of Groningen offers excellent facilities for research and training.

Project description :

Our goal is to unravel the intricate relationship between metabolism and the biology of ageing. This relationship, which has been conserved throughout evolution, is bidirectional: metabolism affects the ageing of an organism, while the metabolic system itself declines under the influence of ageing. Both metabolism and ageing are systems properties that are affected by a large number of processes at the molecular, cellular and organ level. Hence a full understanding of metabolism, ageing and their interaction necessitates a systems-biology approach. We use the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the mouse as model organisms. With an interdisciplinary team of scientists, we will use various approaches of systems biology, including (i) high-throughput omics techniques, (ii) dedicated quantitative experimentation, (iii) top-down computational approaches, and (iv) bottom-up modelling approaches.

The UMCG and the Faculty of Mathemathics and Natural Sciences are recruiting 13 PhD students/postdocs from various disciplines for SBC-EMA. Projects include:
