Purchase College, SUNY, is pleased to announce a search for two Purchase College Diversity Fellows for the 2011-2012 academic year. The Purchase College Diversity Fellowship is a one-year, non-renewable fellowship for advanced doctoral students (ABD) or candidates nearing completion of an MFA. Purchase College Diversity Fellows are scholars or artists from groups underrepresented in the academy in general and the college in particular. They have an exceptional scholarly/artistic profile or have demonstrated their potential for doing outstanding work in their fields. We expect to award two fellowships each year.
The mission of Purchase College is to offer a unique education that combines programs in the liberal arts with conservatory programs in the arts in ways that emphasize inquiry, mastery of skills, and creativity. We celebrate the values of individuality, diversity, and creativity in a community of educational excellence. We are seeking Fellows who will help us realize our mission and bring to the college the diverse perspectives of those who have overcome demonstrable disadvantages or impediments to their success in higher education.
Qualifications: Fellows may come from any academic discipline or any field in the visual or performing arts. They are expected to be a regular, on-campus presence and will be affiliated with the academic units most relevant to their work and/or with the Purchase Writers Center, the focus for writing-related programs and activities across the college and beyond.
Purchase College Diversity Fellows will be provided with professional and teaching mentors, faculty members who will introduce them to the institutional expectations of public colleges or universities. Fellows will meet throughout the year with their mentors and with faculty members whose work intersects with theirs. The fellowship carries a stipend of $25,000, a small budget for research support, office space in the Writers Center, and access to the library and its research resources and databases. The Fellowship places primary emphasis on completion of the dissertation or a substantial artistic project. Fellows will teach one course in their scholarly or artistic field and give a public presentation on their fellowship project.
