[UK] PhD Scholarship : An Investigation of Cultural Practices and Artistic Outcomes and Activities which Respond to Urban and Rural Public Spaces
[UK] Scholarship Description: The University of Northampton invites applications for a three year full-time studentship investigating responses to Urban and Rural Sites Through Contemporary Interdisciplinary Art Practice. The research investigates how contrasting external spaces/places influence creative thinking and outcomes and equally how the perception of spaces and places can be altered and reinvigorated through artistic interventions. The project facilitates a rigorous and systematic visual/performance-based exploration of the symbiosis between public space and private thoughts and creativity. The researcher will interact with two Northamptonshire arts organisations with experience in the commissioning of artistic interventions within urban and rural settings. The research seeks to contribute to the greater understanding of public behaviour and their interaction with and reception of art seen in public settings. The research will communicate a clear reflective account of relations between ‘natural’ and ‘man-made’ sites and personally-motivated creative outcomes. The aims of the project are:
• to investigate how experience and understanding of particular public spaces in Northamptonshire might be enhanced through interdisciplinary arts research
• to rigorously analyse and document subtle relationships between external site-specific stimuli and internal or metaphysical processes
• to compare and contrast through practice-led methods how creative solutions are conceptualised and manifested in response to the stimuli of both the rural and the urban
Scholarship Application Deadline: 12 November 2010
